Chapter 1: The Daughter He Tried to Silence
AT HIS OWN WEDDING, MY BROTHER-IN-LAW SL@PPED HIS SEVEN-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER FOR CRYING OVER HER "DE@D" MOTHER—BUT HE DIDN'T KNOW I HAD BROUGHT SOMEONE WITH ME.
Lily was standing beside Ryan and his new bride, Vanessa, with tears streaming down her face.
"I want Mommy."
Ryan leaned toward her.
"Your mother is gone.
Stop this."
Lily shook her head.
"I don't want Vanessa to be my mommy!"
Ryan sl@pped her.
The entire ballroom went silent.
I rushed forward and pulled Lily into my arms.
She buried her face against me.
"Uncle James, please bring Mommy back."
Ryan stared at me with panic in his eyes.
"Don't you dare."
I turned toward the entrance.
"I don't have to."
Vanessa looked confused.
Then the doors opened.
Emily stepped in, pale and shaking—but very much alive.
Lily whispered, "Mommy?"
Ryan stumbled backward.
And judging by his face, he knew exactly why Emily had come.

Ryan just sl@pped his own daughter at the altar to silence her — but Emily is alive and standing in that doorway.
