Chapter 2: The Name She Was Never Supposed to Hear

It was my brother.
He was standing at the end of the hallway with his hands in his pockets, looking at the camera in my hand like it was something dangerous.
"Marcus." My voice came out flat.
"What are you doing here?"
"Just came to wish her a happy birthday." He smiled, but his eyes didn't move from the camera.
"Come on, man.
It's a kids' party.
Don't make a scene."
My wife took a small step toward him.
That one step told me everything.
"You two planned this," I said.
"Nobody planned anything." Her voice was steady.
Too steady.
My daughter pressed her face against my back.
I looked down at the camera again.
My thumb hovered over the play button.
"Don't." Marcus said it quietly.
Like a warning.
"Why not?"
He didn't answer.
My wife reached out and touched his arm.
Just once.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
And suddenly I wasn't thinking about the closet anymore.
I pressed play.
The screen was dark at first.
Then the light shifted.
And I heard my wife's voice — clear, close, like she was standing right next to the camera.
She was talking to someone.
And she used a name I hadn't heard in two years.
My daughter's hand tightened around my sleeve.
"Daddy," she whispered.
"That's what she says every time."
My legs went cold.
