Chapter 1: The Closet Behind the Celebration

At His Daughter's Birthday Party, He Heard Her Crying Behind A Locked Door — Then He Found A Camera The Stepmother Desperately Wanted Back.
The birthday party was loud.
Kids were laughing, music was playing, and everyone was gathered around the cake.
Then I heard something from the hallway.
Pounding.
At first, I thought it was part of the noise.
Then I heard my daughter's voice.
"Dad, please!"
I hurried toward the hallway.
The sound was coming from a locked door.
I grabbed the handle.
"Sweetheart?"
"Dad!"
I forced the door open.
And there she was.
Sitting alone inside a dark laundry closet.
Her cheeks were wet from crying.
I dropped down beside her.
"Who put you in here?"
Before she could answer, my wife stepped into the hallway.
"She ruined the cake."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"She needed a timeout."
My daughter grabbed my sleeve.
Then she whispered:
"She puts me here every time you leave."
I stared at her.
"Every time?"
She nodded.
My wife immediately moved forward.
"She's exaggerating."
But my daughter pointed toward a shelf behind the detergent bottles.
"My camera is still inside."
I reached up and found a tiny child's camera.
The screen was still glowing.
A red recording indicator blinked in the corner.
My wife's face changed.
"Give me that."
She reached for it.
I pulled the camera away.
"Why are you scared of a child's camera?"
"I'm not.
Just give it to me."
My daughter slipped behind me.
I looked down at the camera.
Then pressed playback.
For a few seconds, there was only darkness and muffled sound.
Then a voice came through the tiny speaker.
My wife stopped moving.
I turned the volume up.
And before the first full sentence could finish…
someone standing at the end of the hallway whispered:
"You need to stop that video."
I looked up.
And the person standing there was the last person I expected to see.

What is on that recording — and who is standing at the end of that hallway?
