Chapter 8: What Vanessa Built in the Dark

The solicitor's name was Gerald Foss.

Olivia found him the next morning through the letterhead on the guardianship document.

She didn't tell her father until she had already called the office and confirmed he existed.

"He's real," she said, setting her phone on the kitchen table.

"The firm is real.

And they drafted that letter six weeks ago."

Adrian looked up from his coffee.

"On whose instruction?"

"Vanessa's.

But here's the part that matters." Olivia sat down.

"I spoke to the receptionist.

She thought I was calling to confirm a follow-up appointment.

Apparently there was one scheduled for this week.

Yesterday, actually."

"The deadline," Clara said from across the table.

"The deadline," Olivia confirmed.

"And the appointment was cancelled.

Yesterday morning.

Before any of this happened."

Adrian set his cup down.

"She cancelled it herself?"

"No." Olivia looked at him.

"Someone else called to cancel it.

A man.

He gave a different name but described himself as a family representative."

The kitchen went quiet.

"Daniel," Clara said.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I don't know that," Olivia said carefully.

"I do." Clara stood up.

"I told Daniel about the letter.

Last week, after I found it.

I told him what I'd seen and he said he'd look into it.

I didn't ask him to do anything — I just told him." She pressed her hand flat on the table.

"He must have called the firm."

"To cancel the appointment," Adrian said.

"To stop it from going forward." Clara looked at him.

"He was protecting us.

That's what Daniel does.

That's why he filed the claim against your company — because someone told him you were involved in a property deal that hurt our family.

And when he found out that wasn't true, when he realized he'd been given false information, he withdrew it.

He didn't tell me at first because he was ashamed." Her voice steadied.

"He should have come to you directly.

Both times.

I know that.

But he was trying to protect me, not hurt you."

Adrian was quiet for a moment.

"Who gave him the false information about the property deal?" he asked.

Clara looked at him.

They both already knew.

"She's been doing this for a long time," Olivia said.

"Hasn't she."

It wasn't a question.

Adrian stood up and walked to the window.

The street outside was ordinary.

A neighbor walking a dog.

A delivery van pulling away.

"She was my wife's closest friend," he said.

"She was in the hospital the night Emma was born.

She held her before I did." He paused.

"I trusted her with everything."

"I know," Olivia said.

"And she used that." He turned around.

His face was calm in the way that comes after something breaks and the person decides not to fall apart.

"She used eleven years of trust to get close enough to try to take my daughter."

Clara crossed the room and stood near him.

Not touching.

Just near.

"What do you need?" she asked.

"I need to know if there's more," he said.

"I need to know if the guardianship letter is the only legal document she had drafted.

I need to know if she has anything else — anything that could affect Emma's future." He looked at Olivia.

"Can you get me a meeting with a family law solicitor today?"

"Already texted one," Olivia said.

"She can see us at two."

Adrian nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Set it face-down on the counter without answering.

"Vanessa?" Clara asked.

"Gerald Foss," he said.

They looked at each other.

The phone rang out.

Then immediately rang again.

Adrian picked it up.

"Mr.

Foss," he said.

"I was going to call you today."

A pause.

Then a voice — careful, professional, with something uncomfortable underneath it.

"Mr.

Calloway.

I think we need to meet.

There are some things about the documents Miss Vanessa brought to us that I wasn't fully aware of until this morning." Another pause.

"I believe you may have grounds for a formal complaint.

And I want to be on the right side of this before it goes any further."

Adrian looked at Clara.

May you like

Then at Olivia.

"I'll be there at noon," he said.
