Chapter 1: The Girl Who Knew a Dead Man's Secret

A 20-Year-Old Woman Secretly Signaled the Mafia Boss for Help — What He Did Next Changed Both of Their Lives Forever

The Obsidian Room was not a place for the weak.

Hidden beneath the streets of Manhattan near Lexington Avenue and 47th Street, it was a private refuge where extreme wealth mixed freely with corruption.

Billionaires, developers, politicians, and men whose names rarely appeared in official records occupied its shadowed rooms beneath amber light and relentless music.

To 20-year-old Sienna Hayes, it was simply a claustrophobic job that paid enough in tips to keep the electricity on in her cramped Queens apartment.

For the previous 3 weeks, however, the club had become something else.

A trap.

Sienna stood in one of the narrow service corridors with a silver tray of crystal tumblers pressed against her chest.

Her knuckles were white.

Her heart hammered against her ribs.

Mickey Dolan had been looking for her.

Mickey was a mid-level enforcer and loan shark known for breaking fingers before asking questions.

Sienna's older brother, Leo, had borrowed $40,000 from men connected to Mickey in an attempt to finance a failed startup.

2 weeks earlier, Leo fled New York.

The debt remained.

And with Leo gone, Mickey transferred responsibility to the only family member left behind.

"Going somewhere, sweetheart?"

The voice came from near the service elevator.

Sienna stopped.

Mickey stepped into the dim light.

He was heavyset, wearing an inexpensive suit that failed to conceal the shoulder holster beneath it.

His face was weathered, and his smile carried no warmth.

"Mickey."

Sienna tried to keep her voice steady.

"I'm working."

"The manager expects me back."

"The manager knows better than to interfere with my business."

Mickey moved closer.

His shoes struck the floor heavily.

"You're out of time."

He looked at her.

"It's Friday."

"The interest compounded."

He smiled again.

"We're at $50,000."

Sienna stepped back.

"I don't have it."

Her shoulder blades met the mahogany-paneled wall.

"I told you I don't know where Leo went."

"I'm saving everything I can."

Mickey moved without warning.

His hand closed around her throat and shoved her back against the wall.

The tray fell.

Crystal shattered across the floor.

Sienna clawed at his wrist, but Mickey barely moved.

"I don't care about your savings."

His face came close enough that she could smell tobacco and whiskey.

"You're coming with me tonight."

Sienna stopped breathing properly.

"I know clients in the Hamptons."

His voice dropped.

"Men who will pay very well to break in someone like you."

He tightened his grip.

"You'll work Leo's debt off on your back."

Panic flooded through her.

Sienna fought harder.

Down the corridor, a club security guard appeared.

For 1 second, hope rose.

Then the guard saw Mickey.

He looked away.

Turned.

Disappeared.

Sienna was alone.

Then the heavy oak doors at the end of the corridor swung open.

Something in the hallway shifted.

The booming club music continued, but suddenly seemed distant.

Men stepped through the doorway.

At the center was Damian Russo.

Sienna knew the name despite having no meaningful connection to organized crime.

Everyone in New York knew it.

At 32, Damian was the undisputed head of the Russo syndicate.

He controlled shipping interests, high-rise developments, and a criminal network sophisticated enough that federal investigators had failed for years to make charges stick.

He wore a charcoal Tom Ford suit.

Dark hair swept back.

Aristocratic features.

An expression of complete boredom.

At his side walked Silas Mercer, his right-hand man, followed by 2 large bodyguards.

Damian moved through the corridor with the quiet certainty of someone who expected every person in his path to move first.

Mickey saw him.

His hand loosened slightly from Sienna's throat.

Respect transformed quickly into fear.

Sienna gasped.

Damian did not initially look at her.

He appeared ready to walk past.

To a man like him, a loan shark terrorizing a waitress might be too insignificant to matter.

Sienna understood what would happen if he did.

Mickey would take her.

She would disappear.

*Think.*

Her father's voice came back to her.

Robert Hayes had once been an NYPD detective assigned to organized crime.

Alcohol and disgrace had destroyed his career, but during one drunken night 3 years earlier, he had talked about the private codes used by the highest levels of organized crime.

"They have their own language, Sienna."

He had laughed bitterly.

"If a parley collapses, or someone needs immediate sanctuary without questions, they don't scream."

Then he demonstrated a gesture.

2 taps against the collarbone.

A flat palm against the hip.

The Corsican Drop.

According to Robert, the signal had effectively died with the mafia wars of 2014.

But once, it had meant something absolute.

Sanctuary.

Sienna stopped fighting Mickey.

She forced herself still.

Damian passed within approximately 10 feet.

Sienna locked her hazel eyes onto his.

Her right hand rose.

Tap.

Tap.

2 fingers against her left collarbone.

Then her palm dropped flat against her hip.

Damian stopped.

His bodyguards reacted instantly, hands moving toward their jackets.

Silas frowned.

"Boss?"

Damian did not answer.

The boredom vanished from his face.

He turned toward Sienna.

His eyes stayed fixed on her.

Then he looked at Mickey.

"Let her go."

His voice was quiet.

Mickey released her immediately.

He stumbled backward as though Sienna herself had become dangerous.

"Mr.

Russo."

His face had drained of color.

"I didn't mean disrespect."

He tried to recover.

"She owes a debt."

"A legitimate street debt."

"I'm just handling business."

Damian approached Sienna.

The marks from Mickey's fingers were already darkening around her throat.

"A legitimate debt?"

He finally looked at Mickey.

"Silas."

Silas moved.

His fist drove into Mickey's stomach.

The larger man folded and collapsed with a wet gasp.

Silas grabbed his collar and pulled him onto his knees.

"You are standing in my city."

Damian adjusted his pocket square.

"And putting your hands on someone who invoked my personal sanctuary."

He looked down at Mickey.

"That makes her mine."

A pause.

"So you are attempting to take something belonging to me."

"I didn't know."

Mickey's lip was bl**ding.

"I swear."

"I didn't know she belonged to you."

"She does now."

Damian turned away.

"If I see you on my streets again, Silas will make sure you no longer have legs to walk them."

"Leave."

Mickey scrambled upright.

He fled.

Sienna stayed against the wall.

Damian studied her.

The club uniform.

The damaged tights.

The bruises around her throat.

"Come with me."

It was not phrased as a request.

Sienna followed.
