Chapter 2: What She Agreed to Do
Richard didn't move.
He just stood there, staring at that scan like a man watching his entire life collapse in slow motion.
The doctor cleared his throat.
"Sir, do you know this patient?"
"She's my mother-in-law." His voice came out flat.
Wrong.
Like a rehearsed answer.
"Then I need to ask you to wait outside while we—"
"I'm not going anywhere."
I stepped between them.
"Richard.
Leave."
He looked at me then.
Really looked at me.
And what I saw in his eyes wasn't anger anymore.
It was fear.
Pure, cornered fear.
My mom hadn't let go of my hand.
Her grip was shaking but steady.
"Tell her," she said softly.
"Or I will."
"Teresa, don't—"
"Tell her what's inside me.
Tell her how it got there."
The room went completely still.
The doctor slowly picked up the phone on the wall.
"I'm going to need to make a call," he said quietly.
"This scan needs to be reported."
Richard's jaw tightened.
He took one step toward my mother.
I moved first.
"Don't you dare come near her."
He stopped.
Then, almost in a whisper, he said something that made my legs go weak.
"You don't understand what she agreed to, Maya.
Ask her.
Ask your precious mother what she agreed to do for money eight years ago."
Teresa closed her eyes.
And a single tear ran down her cheek.
