Chapter 2: The Recording That Changed Everything
Lucas went still.
His hand hovered over the blanket, not moving.
"Your will, sir?"
"Every word she said in this room," Jonathan rasped, "I heard it.
All of it."
Lucas glanced toward the door, then back at Jonathan.
His voice dropped to almost nothing.
"Mr.
Mercer…
how long have you been awake?"
"Long enough." Jonathan's fingers found Lucas's wrist with surprising grip.
"My phone.
Left drawer.
I need you to press play."
Lucas pulled open the drawer.
Inside was a phone — screen already lit, a recording app running.
The timer read 47 minutes, 23 seconds.
Lucas stared at it.
"You recorded her."
"Every word." Jonathan exhaled slowly.
"Now call my attorney.
His name is Gerald Holt.
Tell him it's urgent.
Tell him to bring a witness."
Lucas dialed without another word.
While the phone rang, footsteps clicked in the hallway outside.
Lucas recognized the sound immediately — Victoria's heels, sharp and deliberate, coming back toward the room.
Lucas looked at Jonathan.
Jonathan gave one small nod.
The door handle began to turn.
What Victoria was carrying when she walked back into that room stopped Lucas cold — and changed everything Jonathan thought he already knew.
