Chapter 2: The Envelope She Never Expected

Part 2 ⬇️
Madison didn't move.
She just stood there gripping that envelope like it might disappear if she held it tight enough.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Open it."
"Daniel, please—"
"Open it, Madison."
Her hands were shaking as she pulled out the papers.
I caught a glimpse of the top line before she pressed them against her chest.
*Summons.
Civil Court.
Chicago.*
"Who is suing you?" Daniel asked.
She looked at the floor.
"Madison." His voice dropped.
"Who is it?"
"It's…
it's complicated."
I looked at the man in the black suit.
He was already turning to leave.
"Wait," I said.
"Who sent these?"
He paused at the door.
"I'm just the courier, ma'am." Then he was gone.
Daniel took the papers from Madison's hands before she could stop him.
His eyes moved down the page.
Then he went very still.
"This is our address," he said quietly.
"They've been sending notices here for two months."
I stared at him.
"Two months?"
He looked up at Madison.
"You've been using our home as your legal address without telling us."
Her chin trembled.
"I didn't think it would go this far."
"What wouldn't go this far?" I asked.
She opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Then her phone buzzed on the counter.
She glanced at the screen — and her face went completely white.

What Madison was hiding goes far deeper than a credit card or a lawsuit.
What Daniel reads next changes everything.
