Chapter 1: The Woman Who Kept the Family Together While It Fell Apart

While I was sacrificing my days and nights caring for my sick mother-in-law in the hospital, I caught my husband checking a pregnant woman into the maternity ward and heard him laughingly admit that his mother intentionally kept me trapped at the bedside so he could welcome his long-awaited baby boy with his mistress — so I didn't scream, but instead quietly walked home, called my lawyer, put my house up for sale, and waited for the next morning when he went looking for my 7 million pesos only to discover I had prepared something even better.

While I Was Caring for My Mother-in-Law in the Hospital, I Saw My Husband Enter the VIP Area With a Pregnant Woman.

She Asked: "What If Your Wife Finds Out?" I Didn't Make a Scene; I Went Home, Called a Lawyer, and Put the Property Up for Sale.

The Next Morning, When He Went Looking for My 7 Million, He Discovered I Had Prepared Something Too.

My name is Mariana Salgado.

I was 42 years old, and I had been married to Ricardo Mendoza for 17 years.

I thought I knew the kind of marriage I had.

It wasn't perfect, but I believed it was built on loyalty, family, and trust.

I had spent years putting everyone else first.

After our daughter Sofía was born, I stepped away from my small fabric shop.

Then came my father-in-law's health problems, my mother-in-law Elvira's needs, and Ricardo's endless work responsibilities.

Little by little, I became the person who handled everything.

The one thing that always hurt was Elvira's obsession with having a grandson.

"A daughter gets married and leaves," she used to say.

"A man carries the family name."

Ricardo always defended our daughter.

"Sofía is enough, Mom."

I believed him.

I also believed he respected what belonged to me.

The house we lived in had been given to me by my parents.

I also had 7 million pesos from an inheritance and the sale of a family property.

Everything was legally in my name.

Then, at the beginning of June, Elvira became seriously ill and needed surgery.

Ricardo showed up at the hospital looking worried, but his phone never stopped ringing.

"The company is stuck with supplier payments," he told me.

"I have to fix some things."

For days, I barely saw him.

I slept in a hospital chair beside Elvira.

I helped her walk, gave her medication, and adjusted her pillows whenever the pain became too much.

One night, I finally decided to go home for a few hours.

"Laura is coming tomorrow.

I need to sleep in my own bed, even if it's only for a little while."

But Elvira grabbed my hand.

"No, daughter.

Stay with me tonight.

I don't know why, but I feel so anxious."

I felt sorry for her.

So I stayed.

The next morning, I went downstairs to get coffee and breakfast.

On my way back, I took a hallway that connected to the maternity area.

That was when I saw Ricardo's car.

He stepped out first.

Then he opened the passenger door and helped a pregnant woman step out.

I recognized her immediately.

Daniela Torres.

A former employee from his company.

Ricardo carried a bag full of baby items and walked her into a private room.

I followed from a distance.

Daniela squeezed his hand.

"I'm scared, Ricardo.

What if Mariana comes?"

My husband glanced around before answering.

"She won't.

She's taking care of my mom."

Daniela looked worried.

"What if she decides to go back home?"

Ricardo answered with a sentence that made everything inside me stop.

"My mom made sure she stayed there."

The hallway suddenly felt different.

Then Daniela touched her stomach and asked:

"Is your mom really happy about the baby being a boy?"

Ricardo smiled.

"She's been waiting years for a grandson."

That was the moment I understood this was bigger than one betrayal.

It wasn't just my husband hiding a second life.

It was an entire family helping him keep me away while I was the one taking care of them.

I didn't confront them.

I didn't scream.

I didn't give them the reaction they expected.

I walked back to the hospital, finished what I had promised to do for Elvira, and went home quietly.

Then I opened the drawer where I kept my documents, picked up my phone, and made the call that would change everything.............
