Chapter 2: The Lawyer in the Hallway

Haley didn't sleep that night.

She sat on the edge of the hotel bed, replaying the recording.

Beckham's voice.

Cathy's laugh.

The words "she trusts me" looping in her head like something breaking over and over.

At 7 a.m., she heard them in the hallway.

She cracked her door open.

Beckham was on his phone, speaking quietly.

Cathy stood beside him, arms crossed, listening.

"It has to be this week," Beckham said.

"Before she starts asking questions."

Cathy lowered her voice.

"What about the other account?"

"She doesn't know it exists."

Haley pressed her back against the door frame.

A second account.

Not just the company.

Something else entirely.

She opened her banking app with shaking hands.

Their joint account looked normal.

But then she remembered — three months ago, Beckham had asked her to sign a form for a "tax filing update." She hadn't read it carefully.

She had trusted him.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Cathy.

*"Miss you.

Hope you're resting.

Call me when you can.

💕"*

Haley stared at those words until the screen blurred.

Then a door down the hall opened.

A man in a suit stepped out — someone she had never seen before.

Beckham shook his hand.

Cathy smiled at him like she already knew him well.

Haley raised her phone.

The man turned slightly, and she saw the badge clipped to his jacket.

It wasn't an investor.

It was a lawyer.
