Chapter 2: The Second Phone

**— PART 2 —**

The paramedics arrived before Preston could say another word.

Two of them moved straight to Sophie.

One pressed a clean cloth against her head.

She whimpered and reached for my hand.

"I've got you," I told her.

"I've got you."

Across the ballroom, I heard Preston's voice drop low and sharp.

"This is embarrassing.

Get them out."

One of the hotel managers stepped forward.

He looked at me — not at Preston — and said quietly, "Ma'am, the police are also on their way.

The security team has already flagged the footage."

Preston went very still.

His new bride touched his arm.

"What footage?"

He didn't answer her.

That's when I noticed the hotel's head of security standing near the side entrance.

He wasn't looking at the guests.

He wasn't looking at me.

He was watching Preston.

And Preston knew it.

My mother moved toward the manager.

"There's been a misunderstanding.

This is a private family event.

Whatever you think you saw—"

"Ma'am." The manager didn't raise his voice.

"The cameras cover the entire ballroom.

Including the head table."

The room shifted.

Two hundred people who had watched a little girl bl**d in silence suddenly couldn't look away.

Preston's jaw tightened.

And then his best man — the one who had stood beside him all evening — quietly set something down on the nearest table.

A second phone.

Still in its case.

Still locked.

And walked straight out of the ballroom without a word.
