Chapter 1: The Girl Who Was Never Supposed to Be There

Vivian raised the strap a second time.

That was when Vincent Moretti stepped in.

The engagement party for Vincent Moretti and Vivian Castellano had cost more than most people earned in a lifetime.

Two hundred guests.

A converted palazzo ballroom.

Champagne that arrived by the case from a private vineyard in Tuscany.

Vivian had planned every detail herself — the floral arrangements, the seating chart, the dress that had taken four months and three fittings to complete.

She had not planned for Clara.

Clara Reyes had been hired as a temporary server through an agency, brought in specifically for the evening to handle the additional guests.

She was twenty-three, quiet, and had spent her first two hours moving through the crowd without incident.

Then she turned too quickly near the champagne station.

A glass tipped.

Wine spread across the white silk tablecloth and caught the edge of Vivian's gown.

It was an accident.

Anyone in the room could see it was an accident.

Vivian did not care.

She crossed the floor so quickly that the guests nearest to her stepped back without quite knowing why.

She reached the decorative display near the entrance, lifted the long leather strap that had been coiled there as part of the aesthetic arrangement, and brought it down across Clara's shoulder before the girl could even turn around.

Clara dropped to her knees.

The second strike caught her across the back.

"Kneel," Vivian said, her voice carrying across the suddenly silent ballroom.

"Clean my shoes, you filthy dog."

Not one of the two hundred guests moved.

Not one of them spoke.

Clara pressed her palm flat against the marble floor, her breath coming in sharp, shallow pulls.

She did not beg.

She did not argue.

She simply stayed very still, the way someone does when they have learned that stillness is the only thing that sometimes makes it stop.

Vivian raised the strap a third time.

That was when the doors behind her opened.

Vincent Moretti had slipped out twenty minutes earlier to take a call from his attorney.

He had returned expecting champagne and applause.

Instead, he walked into silence.

His hand closed around the strap before Vivian could bring it down.

He didn't pull it away.

He simply held it, and the force of his grip stopped everything.

"Why are you holding that?"

Vivian turned.

Her expression shifted instantly — from cold fury to something practiced and soft.

"Vincent, she att@cked me.

I was defending—"

"She att@cked you."

He looked down at Clara on the floor.

At the marks already rising across her shoulder.

At the way she was trembling.

Then he crouched.

Clara flinched when his shadow fell over her.

"Did you?" he asked.

"No." Her voice barely held together.

"I swear.

I didn't."

He believed her before she finished speaking.

Not because he was generous.

Because he had spent twenty years reading people in rooms where lies had consequences, and Clara Reyes was not lying.

He reached toward her to help her up.

That was when he saw it.

A small locket, silver, on a chain around her neck — half-hidden beneath the collar of her uniform.

The design on its face was something he had not seen in fourteen years.

Something he had buried with his mother.

His hand stopped moving.

"Where did you get this?"

What does that locket mean — and what will Vincent do next?
