Chapter 1: The Night I Came Home Early

Vanessa believed nobody would question how she treated my daughter.
Then I came home early.
Five-year-old Lily was sobbing beside a table full of food while Vanessa accused her of stealing half a dinner roll.
Her son, Mason, had a full plate.
Lily had been told she could not eat.
When Vanessa tried to explain it away, Mason exposed the truth.
"She does this when you're at work."
Lily then revealed that Vanessa locked food inside the pantry to keep it from her.
I thought hunger was the worst thing my daughter had endured.
Mason looked at me and said it was not.
He had watched his mother frighten Lily for months and had secretly saved evidence because nobody believed him the first time.
Vanessa rushed toward his tablet.
