Chapter 1: The Only Beautiful Thing She Owned

Tia had been standing in front of that mirror for twenty minutes, afraid to move, because the orange gown was the only beautiful thing she owned.

The dressing room was bright that afternoon.

Sunlight poured through the tall windows, and a long mirror reflected rows of flowers and a small table where a pair of scissors and a gold-colored handbag lay side by side.

Nothing in the room had any lettering on it.

Tia stood in the middle of the floor in the gown.

A long cut ran across the front of it, and she was holding the two edges of the torn fabric together with both hands.

Her shoulders shook, and tears rolled down her face.

She looked down at the dress and could not stop crying.

Marissa, thirty-five, in a plum-purple dress, stood a few steps away with her arms folded and a faint smile on her lips.

She did not look sorry.

She looked like a woman waiting for the room to admire what she had done.

The door opened, and Sayan stepped in.

He was thirty-eight, in a blue velvet jacket, and he stopped just inside the room as his eyes moved from the girl to the gown to the woman in purple.

His voice was low.

"What happened?"

Tia turned her face away and wiped her cheeks.

Her voice came out thin.

"Sayan?

It was just a dress."

Sayan did not answer.

He looked at the torn orange fabric for a long moment, and his face went cold.

He walked past both women to the little table and picked up the gold handbag in one hand.

With the other, he lifted the scissors.

Marissa's smile slipped.

"This is what happens when you hurt someone."

He held the scissors open above the handbag.

Marissa's face went pale, and her lips parted.

Tia lifted her head, her wet eyes fixed on him.

What will Sayan do next — and will Marissa finally get what she deserves?
