Chapter 2: The Letter That Should Have Burned

Roman lifted Milo into his arms.

The boy clung to his neck so tightly that Roman felt his small body trembling.

“How long has this been happening?” Roman asked.

No one answered.

Vivian steadied herself against the broken cart.

“The child exaggerates.

His mother abandoned him, and we did what was necessary.”

Milo suddenly whispered, “Grandma said Mama left because I was bad.”

Roman’s face hardened.

“Your mother did not abandon you.”

Across the table, Sophia’s fork slipped from her hand.

Roman turned toward her.

“You knew?”

Sophia stared at Vivian, then Caroline.

“I was told Milo had already eaten.

They said he preferred hiding beneath the table.”

“She’s lying!” Caroline shouted.

“Then explain this.” Sophia reached into her handbag and pulled out a sealed envelope bearing Roman’s name.

“Vivian ordered me to burn it this morning.”

Vivian lunged for the envelope, but Roman’s guard stepped between them.

Roman tore it open with one hand while holding Milo with the other.

Inside was a photograph and a short note.

The moment he read the first line, all color vanished from his face.

“This handwriting belongs to Milo’s mother,” he said.

Milo raised his tearful eyes.

“Daddy…

is Mama coming home?”

Before Roman could answer, Sophia whispered, “Read the date.

That letter arrived after Vivian told everyone she was gone.”
