Chapter 3: The Voice Leo Remembered

Rico’s gaze dropped to Leo’s hand around Clara’s finger.
“Stay until he lets go.”
Marco stepped forward.
“Mr.
Moretti, she’s only a waitress.”
Leo flinched at his voice and pressed himself against Clara.
“Don’t let him take me.”
Rico went still.
“Who, son?”
Leo pointed at Marco.
The manager’s face drained of color.
“He’s confused.
He’s exhausted.”
Clara felt Leo trembling.
“Why are you afraid of him?”
Marco snapped, “Don’t question the boy!”
Rico turned slowly.
“You speak when I tell you.”
Leo reached inside his shirt and pulled out a small silver button.
A black letter B was engraved on it.
“I found it in Mommy’s car.”
Dante took the button.
“This belongs to Bellini’s private security uniforms.”
Marco backed toward the kitchen.
“That proves nothing.”
Leo covered his ears.
“The voice,” he whispered.
“He had the voice.”
Rico crouched beside his son.
“What voice?”
“The man on the phone that day.
He said, ‘Make sure Rico’s car leaves first.’”
Every face turned toward Marco.
“That’s impossible,” Marco said.
“He wasn’t even in her car.”
“No,” Dante replied, staring at him.
“But Leo’s driver had the call on speaker.”
Marco suddenly reached inside his jacket—and Rico moved between him and Clara.
