Chapter 2: The Four Words She Said Before She Hung Up

The sensor landed on the form with a soft plastic click.

The monitor alarm went off immediately.

Nina was through the door in seconds.

She reattached the sensor, checked the readout, then looked at my phone.

She didn't say anything.

She just pulled the curtain halfway across and walked back to her station.

I finished signing the form.

At 1:47 a.m., I pressed submit.

At 1:49 a.m., the loan officer confirmed receipt.

At 1:51 a.m., my phone died.

I lay in the dark listening to my daughter's heartbeat on the monitor and felt something I hadn't felt in months.

Quiet.

At 7:58 the next morning, my mother called the hospital room directly.

"We need you dressed and downstairs in fifteen minutes."

"I'm still on oxygen."

A pause.

"Don't do this today.

Do you understand what is at stake?"

I said nothing.

"Your father worked for this house.

You owe us this."

I looked at the bruises across my stomach.

"I withdrew my guarantee last night."

The line went completely silent.

Then she said four words I will never forget.

"You ungrateful little b\*tch."

And she hung up.

What I didn't know was that my father was already sitting in the bank lobby — and he had brought someone with him I never expected to see again.
