Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to Say

Part 2 ⬇️

Nathan's face went pale.

Not the pale of embarrassment.

The pale of a man who suddenly understands he has made a very serious mistake.

"That's…

that's the deed," he said quietly.

"Yes," Rebecca answered before I could.

"The deed.

Registered solely under Carter Holdings LLC.

Which is solely owned by your wife."

Margaret stood up from her chair.

"What does that mean?" she demanded.

Rebecca didn't even look at her.

"It means this property was never jointly owned.

It means your son has no legal claim to it.

And it means that when he told Olivia to leave her own home last night…" She paused.

"He may have created a very costly problem for himself."

Nathan turned to me.

"Olivia.

We can talk about this.

You don't have to do this."

I looked at him calmly.

"You told me to leave, Nathan.

So I left."

"That's not what I meant and you know it."

"Then you should have been clearer."

Margaret grabbed his arm.

"Nathan, call David.

Call him right now."

David.

His brother.

The one I had seen twice in the credit card statements.

The hotel.

The dinners.

The jewelry receipts — all charged to a card I didn't know existed.

I looked at Margaret.

She looked away first.

There was something she already knew.

Something she had known for a long time.

And I was about to find out exactly what it was.

---

What Margaret was hiding is far worse than anyone in that room expected.
