Chapter 2: What He Kept in His Pocket

Part 2 ⬇️

His hand went still.

The plastic bag crinkled as his fingers tightened around it.

He didn't pull it free.

He just held it there, beneath the soil, while the dispatcher's voice continued through the dirt.

"Ma'am, are you able to speak?"

My husband looked at me.

Really looked at me.

For the first time in days, the patience left his face completely.

"You called them," he said.

Not a question.

I kept my lips around the straw.

He stood slowly and turned toward the porch.

"Mom.

Get inside."

His mother didn't move.

"What is that?

What's she done?"

"Inside.

Now."

Jocelyn was already on her feet, sandals slapping across the porch boards.

The screen door banged shut behind her.

He crouched back down, close enough that I could smell the coffee on his breath.

"You don't understand what you just did," he said quietly.

"They're going to ask questions.

And when they do, I'm going to tell them you fell.

That you were confused.

That you did this to yourself."

He almost smiled.

"Who are they going to believe?"

I heard tires on the gravel before he finished the sentence.

He heard them too.

He stood.

Looked at the gate.

Looked back at me.

And then he did something I hadn't expected.

He reached into his jacket pocket and took out my prenatal folder — the one I thought I'd lost two months ago.

"I've been keeping this safe," he said.

"For when you came back to your senses."

May you like

What was inside that folder stopped everything.
