Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Part 2 👇

My hands were shaking as I spread the receipts across the kitchen table.

The numbers didn't lie.

Month after month, the money I had wired to my mother had been redirected.

Withdrawn in cash.

Spent on things I never approved.

I called her.

She picked up on the first ring.

"Where is the document, Mom?"

Silence.

Then: "I don't know what you're talking about."

"My daughter heard you.

She heard you say my name, my house, my signature.

Where is it?"

Her voice shifted — cold in a way I had never heard before.

"You're going to believe a child over your own mother?"

I couldn't speak.

Then I heard a second voice in the background.

A man's voice.

Someone I didn't recognize.

My mother covered the phone, but not fast enough.

I heard her whisper: "She found the receipts."

The line went dead.

I stood there staring at my phone.

Then my older daughter touched my arm.

"Mommy," she said quietly.

"There's something else.

I didn't tell you everything."

She reached into her pocket and placed a folded piece of paper on the table.

My hands went cold the moment I saw the signature at the bottom.

It looked exactly like mine.

But I had never signed anything.

What my daughter handed me that night exposed something far darker than missing money.
