Chapter 2: What She Left Behind the Wall

I waited until I heard Mother's heels click back toward the living room.

Then I moved.

The master closet smelled like Emily's perfume.

It nearly brought me to my knees.

I found the grate low on the back wall, half-hidden behind a row of her dresses.

My fingers worked the screws free.

Behind the drywall panel, wrapped in a plastic freezer bag, was a slim silver laptop — and a folded note taped to the lid.

My hands were shaking as I opened it.

*Daniel — if you're reading this, I was right to be afraid.

Check the folder called "August." Don't let them near the baby.

Don't trust anyone in that house.

I love you.

August.

Eight months ago.

While I was still in Helmand.

I powered the laptop on.

The folder opened.

Inside were photographs — dozens of them.

Caleb and a woman I didn't recognize, signing documents at a lawyer's office.

A second photo: the same woman, standing in our kitchen, laughing with Mother.

The date stamp on every photo: four months before Emily's due date.

I heard a floorboard creak outside the closet door.

Then Caleb's voice, low and tight through the wood: "She found the laptop, didn't she?

We need to move.

Tonight."
