Chapter 2: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

The doors swung open.
Not one person.
Not two.
Four men in suits walked in — calm, deliberate, carrying folders.
Behind them, a woman in her sixties.
Silver hair.
Straight back.
Eyes that had seen everything and forgiven nothing.
The rich woman's hand went limp.
The torn veil fell to the floor.
"That's…
that's not possible," she breathed.
"You're supposed to be—"
"Gone?" the older woman said quietly.
"Is that what he told you?"
The bridesmaid didn't move.
Didn't speak.
She just watched her mother cross that ballroom like she owned every inch of it.
Because once — she had.
The groom grabbed the bridesmaid's arm.
Hard.
"Whatever you think you're doing," he said through his teeth, "stop it.
Right now.
You have no idea what you're walking into."
She looked down at his hand on her arm.
Then back up at him.
"Let go," she said.
"Or the second folder gets opened first."
He released her.
One of the suited men set a folder on the nearest table.
A guest leaned over — then stepped back, face pale.
"What's in there?" someone whispered.
Nobody answered.
The older woman stopped in front of the rich man.
The one whose face had gone white.
The one who already knew.
"Hello, Richard," she said softly.
"It's been twenty-three years."
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
