Chapter 2: What the Photograph Proved

Julian set the papers down slowly.
Then he picked them up again, as if the words might change.
They didn't.
"This is wrong," he said.
"The house is in both our names."
"It was," Sarah said.
"Until fourteen months ago."
Julian turned to me.
"What did you do?"
"I protected what was mine," I said.
"The way I should have done years ago."
His chair scraped back.
He stood up, and for a moment the room felt very small.
"You can't take Sterling House," he said.
"I built that company."
Sarah slid a second document across the table.
"With Elena's inheritance.
Fully documented.
Every transfer.
Every account.
Every signature."
Julian stared at the page.
A vein appeared at his temple.
"Victoria will hear about this."
"Victoria," Sarah said quietly, "has already been contacted by our office."
Something moved across Julian's face.
Not anger this time.
Something closer to fear.
"What does that mean?" he said.
Sarah reached into her leather case one more time and placed a single photograph on the table.
Julian looked at it.
The color left his face.
"Where did you get that?" he whispered.
I looked at the photograph too.
I had seen it before.
I had been the one who found it.
But what it proved — what it meant for Sterling House, for Victoria, and for the man standing across the table from me — that was only the beginning of what Julian still didn't know.
