Chapter 2: The Key in Her Hand

My breath stopped.

“Who told you that, Sophie?”

She looked past me toward the grand staircase.

Her whole body stiffened.

“She did.”

A woman’s voice cut through the silence.

“Roman, step away from that child.”

I knew the voice before I turned.

My mother stood at the top of the stairs, one hand gripping the railing.

For the first time in my life, she looked afraid.

“Why does my daughter call you Grandma?”

“She’s confused,” Mother said.

“Someone brought her here to humiliate us.”

Sophie grabbed my sleeve.

“No, Daddy.

Grandma kept me in the little room.”

A murmur swept through the ballroom.

Mother hurried down the stairs.

“She is repeating lies.

Give her to me.”

Sophie whimpered and hid behind me.

The red flannel slipped from her fist, and a small brass key struck the marble.

I picked it up.

A paper tag was tied around it in my wife’s handwriting.

ROMAN—BEFORE SHE FINDS US.

My mother’s face went white.

“Where is your mother?” I asked Sophie.

Her lips trembled.

“She told me to run.

She said Grandma was coming back.”

Then someone began pounding on the ballroom doors from the outside.
