Chapter 2: He's Been Waiting Twenty-Three Years

⬇️ **PART 2** ⬇️

The room went completely still.

Vanessa's face drained of color.

She looked at the groundskeeper, then at the necklace in Richard's hand, then at me — and for the first time since I'd worked in that house, she said nothing.

Richard's voice was barely above a whisper.

"Harold…

what do you know?"

The old man stepped fully into the room.

His eyes were wet.

"Eleanor didn't d*e alone, Mr.

Caldwell.

She had a baby girl.

Your father made arrangements.

He said it was better that way.

Better for the family name."

"Better for the family name," Richard repeated slowly.

Like the words tasted wrong.

Vanessa found her voice.

"This is insane.

She's a maid.

A nobody.

You can't seriously—"

"Vanessa." Richard's tone stopped her cold.

He turned the pendant over in his palm.

His jaw was tight.

"My father gave Eleanor this necklace the Christmas before she disappeared.

I remember it.

I was twelve years old."

I couldn't speak.

My legs felt like they might give out.

Then Richard's phone rang.

He looked at the screen and went still.

It was his father calling.

Harold looked at me with something close to grief.

"He's been waiting for this call for twenty-three years, child."

Vanessa grabbed Richard's arm.

"Don't answer it.

Richard.

Do NOT answer that phone."
