Chapter 2: The Man With the Steady Hands

Part 2 ⬇️

The ambulance came and went.

Dr.

Rossi cleared Leo's airway and declared him stable.

Alessio never left the room.

When the last medic stepped out, Alessio turned to his head of security — a broad man named Caruso who had been with the family for eleven years.

"Pull the nursery footage.

Tonight.

All of it."

Caruso didn't move.

That was the first wrong thing.

"Boss, the camera system went offline around two.

Server glitch.

We lost the window."

Alessio went very still.

"A glitch."

"Yes, sir."

I was sitting in the corner chair with Leo against my chest.

I said nothing.

But I watched Caruso's hands.

They were too relaxed for a man delivering bad news to Alessio Romano.

Alessio looked at me.

I looked at the camera above the door.

The green light was still on.

"Your system went offline," I said quietly, "but that camera has its own local memory card."

The silence that followed was different from the ones before it.

Caruso's jaw tightened — just once, just slightly.

Alessio saw it too.

"Leave us," he said.

"Boss—"

"Now."

Caruso left.

But in the doorway, for just one second, he glanced back at me.

Not with anger.

With something colder than that.

What's on that memory card — and why does Caruso not want anyone to find it?
