Chapter 2: The Message on Vanessa’s Phone
My knees trembled as I sat beside Luca.
Vanessa stared at me as if I had taken something that belonged to her.
“You’re trusting a maid over your fiancée?” she demanded.
“I’m trusting evidence,” Luca said.
“Unless there’s something else you want to admit.”
Before Vanessa could answer, Marco returned carrying a folder.
“The original agreement,” he said, placing it before Luca.
“Thirty-two guests.
Six thousand eight hundred dollars.”
Luca opened it.
“Then where did the extra nine thousand six hundred go?”
Marco pulled out a second page.
“This appeared in my office after Vanessa called me.”
Vanessa reached for it, but Luca covered the document with his hand.
“Don’t.”
Her face tightened.
“My cousin charged for the additional meals.”
Marco shook his head.
“Your cousin never delivered any food.”
A murmur swept through the room.
Luca studied the page.
“Then why was his company paid?”
Vanessa went pale.
Marco pointed to the bottom.
“That isn’t my signature.”
Luca looked at Vanessa.
“Whose is it?”
“I don’t know.”
At that moment, Vanessa’s phone lit up on the table.
The message was visible to everyone beside her:
DID HE FIND THE SECOND INVOICE?
Luca picked up the phone before she could reach it.
“Who is Daniel?” he asked.
Vanessa froze.
Then Marco whispered, “Luca…
Daniel isn’t her cousin.”
Luca slowly turned toward him.
“Then who is he?”
Marco opened his mouth—but the dining-room doors suddenly swung open.
