Chapter 3: What the Folder Contained

Charlotte held Gerald's gaze for a moment.
Then she said, "Yes.
That's me."
Gerald exhaled slowly.
He closed the folder and pressed it flat against his chest again, the way a man does when he is trying to decide how much trouble he is already in.
Vivienne looked between them.
"What is going on?
Who is she?"
"Miss Holt." Gerald's voice was measured.
"I strongly suggest you step back."
"I will not step back." Vivienne moved closer to Charlotte, close enough that her perfume filled the space between them.
"I don't know what game this woman is playing, but I want her removed from this building.
I want her removed right now."
"Miss Holt—"
"Do you know who I am?" Vivienne's voice rose.
"My family has been a partner of the Solmere Group for eleven years.
Eleven years.
I have every right to be here.
She does not."
Gerald opened the folder again.
He removed a single document — thick paper, official seal at the top — and held it out toward Vivienne without a word.
Vivienne snatched it.
She read the first line.
Then she read it again.
Her hand dropped slightly.
"This is…" She looked up at Charlotte.
"This can't be real."
"It was filed with the court fourteen days ago," Gerald said.
"The original is in the Solmere Group's legal archive.
What you're holding is a certified copy."
Vivienne's eyes moved back to the document.
Charlotte watched her read it — watched the exact moment the words stopped being abstract and became real.
The document named Charlotte Eleanor Vale as the sole surviving heir to the Solmere Estate.
It listed every property.
Every account.
Every subsidiary.
Every hotel in the chain, including the one they were standing in.
At the bottom, in her mother's handwriting, was a signature dated three weeks before she d*ed.
"This is a forgery," Vivienne said.
But her voice had lost its edge.
"It has been verified by two independent forensic document examiners," Gerald said.
"Both reports are attached."
Vivienne looked at Charlotte.
Something had shifted in her expression — not guilt, not yet.
Something closer to calculation.
"Even if this is real," she said quietly, "it doesn't explain what she was doing sneaking around this building.
It doesn't explain why she didn't simply walk in through the front door and announce herself."
Charlotte spoke for the first time since standing up from the floor.
"Because I needed to see what you were doing when you thought no one was watching."
The lobby was so quiet that the words carried to every corner of the room.
Vivienne's jaw tightened.
"And what exactly do you think you saw?"
"Enough," Charlotte said.
She reached into the small bag at her side and removed a phone.
She placed it on the marble reception desk beside her, screen facing up.
A recording application was open.
The timer read forty-seven minutes and counting.
Vivienne stared at it.
"You were recording," she said.
"From the moment I walked in," Charlotte said.
"Including everything you said to me on the floor.
Including the instruction you gave to the man at the east corridor door at nine forty-three this morning."
Vivienne's face went very still.
"What instruction?" Gerald asked.
Neither woman answered him.
Vivienne took one step toward the phone.
Charlotte picked it up first and slipped it back into her bag.
"I'd like to speak with you privately," Vivienne said.
Her voice had changed entirely.
Smooth now.
Careful.
"I think there's been a misunderstanding.
A very unfortunate one.
And I'd like the chance to explain."
Charlotte looked at her for a long moment.
"There's nothing to explain privately," she said.
"Whatever you have to say, you can say it here."
Vivienne glanced around the lobby.
The guests had not moved.
The two security guards were still standing where they had stopped.
Every eye in the room was on her.
She smiled — the kind of smile that takes practice.
"All right," she said.
"Then let's talk."
She reached into her own bag and removed a small envelope.
She set it on the reception desk between them.
Charlotte didn't touch it.
"Open it," Vivienne said.
"Please."
Charlotte looked at the envelope.
Then at Vivienne.
"What's inside it?" Gerald asked.
Vivienne kept her eyes on Charlotte.
May you like
"Something that changes the conversation entirely," she said.
"Something that explains why Charlotte Vale should be very careful about what she does next."
