Chapter 2: The Warning in Her Hands

“She understands everything,” Ruby finished.

“And she can answer.”

Santiago’s face tightened.

“That is impossible.

Every specialist said she had shut the world out.”

“They were wrong.”

Sophia suddenly reached for Ruby’s wrist.

Her fingers moved urgently.

Santiago stepped closer.

“What is she saying?”

Ruby watched Sophia’s hands, and the color drained from her face.

“Tell me,” Santiago demanded.

Ruby swallowed.

“She says she stopped speaking because no one believed her.”

“Believed her about what?”

Before Ruby could answer, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Sophia froze.

Her eyes widened, and she backed toward the bed.

An older woman appeared in the doorway carrying a silver tray.

The moment she saw Ruby beside Sophia, the tray shook in her hands.

“You,” she whispered.

Ruby stared at her.

“You remember me?”

Santiago looked between them.

“What is going on?”

Sophia’s hands began moving again, faster than before.

Ruby translated in a trembling voice.

“She says this woman was here seven years ago…

on the night everything changed.”

The older woman dropped the tray.

Then Sophia pointed at Santiago and signed one final sentence.

Ruby went completely still.

“What did she say?” Santiago asked.

Ruby looked directly at him.

“She said you must not trust the person who brought you into this room.”
