Chapter 1: The Cry Behind the Painting

THE HOUSEKEEPER FOLLOWED THE SOUND OF A CHILD'S CRY — AND FOUND THE BILLIONAIRE'S NEW WIFE'S TERRIFYING SECRET SEALED BEHIND A HIDDEN BASEMENT WALL…
The crystal chandeliers hanging above the ballroom flooded the room with dazzling light, bouncing off polished marble floors and illuminating the carefree laughter of New York City's upper class.
Emma Torres, wearing her crisp housekeeping uniform and bright yellow cleaning gloves, moved quietly through the crowd.
Carrying a tray stacked with used champagne glasses, she blended into the background among elegant silk gowns, custom tuxedos, glittering jewelry, and clouds of luxury perfume.
Standing at the heart of the celebration was William Sterling, the powerful real-estate billionaire whose recent marriage had become the talk of the city.
At his side stood Isabella Sterling, dressed in flowing ivory satin, graceful and composed to an almost unsettling degree.
Only a month after their wedding, it seemed as though every memory of William's late wife had quietly disappeared beneath the glamour surrounding his new marriage.
As Emma stepped into the quieter hallway reserved for staff access, the sounds of music and conversation faded behind her.
Then she heard something.
A tiny noise.
Weak.
Almost hidden.
A muffled cry.
Not loud enough to be alarming.
Not sharp enough to be called a scream.
Just a faint, exhausted sob.
The sound of a child.
Emma immediately froze.
She knew that cry.
She had heard it before.
Many nights, she had comforted nine-year-old Ethan Sterling when nightmares kept him awake.
Yet Ethan hadn't been seen in his room for five days.
Isabella had assured everyone that he was spending time with family in Maine so they could strengthen their bond before settling fully into their new family dynamic.
Emma had never questioned it.
Until now.
The crying returned.
Quiet.
Broken.
Begging for help without words.
Then nothing.
A strange, unnatural silence swallowed the hallway.
A chill moved through her as her eyes settled on a massive baroque painting hanging against the exposed brick wall.
It looked completely wrong there, far too decorative and oversized for such a narrow corridor.
Acting on pure instinct, Emma carefully set her tray aside.
She reached for the heavy golden frame, gripped it firmly, and pushed….
---
Where is Ethan — and what has Isabella been hiding?
