Chapter 2: What Grandma Gave the Judge

Ryan didn't answer me.
He looked at his mother instead.
Diane crossed her arms and said, "Don't make this bigger than it is."
I stepped closer to Ryan.
"What judge?
What videos?
Why does our four-year-old know the word judge?"
He finally spoke.
"It's nothing.
Mom was just trying to scare him into listening."
"She chained him to the floor like an animal."
"She didn't chain him.
It was loose.
He wasn't hurt."
I couldn't breathe.
"You watched her do this.
Noah said you watched."
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"He's four.
He doesn't know what he saw."
That was when Noah tugged my sleeve.
He was still holding something I hadn't noticed — a small piece of paper, folded twice, crumpled at the edges.
He held it up to me and said, "Grandma said give this to the judge.
Not you."
I took it from his hand.
Diane moved toward me fast.
"That is not yours."
I opened it anyway.
It wasn't a note.
It was a printed form.
With my name on it.
And Ryan's signature at the bottom.
I looked up at my husband.
"When did you sign this?"
He said nothing.
Diane said, "You were never going to be good enough for this family."
