Chapter 2: The Man on the Recording

Adelaide glanced toward the exit, but Christian straightened and blocked her path.
“No one leaves until I hear the truth.”
“I told you, it was only wine,” Adelaide said.
“That girl is trying to embarrass me.”
Marnie’s hands shook around the tray.
“I saw her take a tiny bottle from her glove,” she said.
“She poured three drops into your glass while you were speaking to the manager.”
“That’s a lie!” Adelaide snapped.
She rose too quickly.
A small silver vial slipped from beneath her glove, struck the floor, and rolled to Christian’s shoe.
The label had been scraped away.
Christian picked it up with his handkerchief.
“If this is nothing, why did you hide it?”
Before Adelaide could answer, the restaurant manager hurried over holding a phone.
“Sir, our security camera recorded the table.
You need to see this.”
For the first time, Adelaide looked truly frightened.
She leaned toward Marnie and whispered, “If he watches that recording, he’ll discover what you did too.”
Marnie went pale.
Christian looked from one woman to the other, then pressed play.
Three seconds into the video, his expression changed.
“What happened before Adelaide touched that glass?”
Marnie opened her mouth—but a familiar man appeared on the screen behind her.
Christian recognized him immediately.
