Chapter 2: The Third Person in the Corridor

Amber grabbed my arm the moment Garnet steered her toward the side corridor.
"You switched the chairs." Her voice was low, shaking.
"That was meant for her."
"Was it?" I said.
"Don't play games with me.
You're a retired accountant.
You have no idea who you're dealing with."
I looked at her calmly.
"You're right.
I probably don't."
She straightened her ruined gown and lifted her chin.
"Garnet will handle you.
This is our day, and you just made it a war."
Garnet said nothing.
He stood slightly behind her, the way he always did now — not beside her, but behind her.
That told me everything.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from the venue manager: *"Sir — the hallway camera also picked up a second conversation.
You'll want to see the timestamp.
11:14 AM.
Before the ceremony."*
I didn't look at the screen long.
But I saw enough.
There had been a third person in that corridor when Amber applied the glue.
May you like
Someone neither Garnet nor Amber had mentioned.
Someone who was still sitting at one of the guest tables, smiling, completely unaware that I now knew they were there.
