Chapter 2: The Bottle With No Name

Nathaniel didn't shout.
He didn't move.
He just looked at Isabella the way a man looks at something he can never unsee.
"Get away from her," he said.
"Now."
Isabella's composure cracked for only a second.
Then she straightened, smoothed her jacket, and smiled.
"Nathaniel.
You misunderstood what you heard."
"I heard every word."
She took one step toward him.
"Your mother has been confused lately.
She called me in a panic.
I came to help her."
Evelyn's voice came from the water, thin and trembling.
"That's not true.
She pushed my hands off the edge.
She said — "
"Mother." Nathaniel was already moving, reaching into the jacuzzi, pulling Evelyn up by both arms.
Her robe was soaked through.
She was shaking so hard she could barely hold onto him.
He wrapped his jacket around her and turned back to Isabella.
"How long?" he asked quietly.
"How long what?"
"How long have you been doing this to her?"
Isabella said nothing.
But her eyes moved — just briefly — to the small side table near the terrace door.
Nathaniel followed her gaze.
A glass of water sat there.
Half empty.
Next to a bottle of pills with Evelyn's name on the label.
But the prescription wasn't one he recognized.
He had never seen that bottle before in his life.
---
What was in that bottle — and how long had Isabella been giving it to Evelyn?
