Chapter 2: The Woman Who Walked Through the Gates

Part 2 — Continued

She was brought in through the side entrance.

No coat.

No bag.

Worn shoes that had walked a long way.

She looked like someone the city had quietly forgotten.

But her eyes were steady.

She sat across from me without being told to, and she didn't look around the room the way most people do when they see money for the first time.

She already knew where she was.

"How do you know about my children?" I said.

She folded her hands on the table.

"Because Genevieve told me about them.

Every single day."

The air left the room.

"My wife has been gone for two years."

"I know." She didn't flinch.

"I was with her at the end.

Not in this house.

Somewhere you didn't know she went."

I felt Prescott shift behind me.

"That's not possible," I said.

"I knew everything about Genevieve's final months."

The woman reached into the front pocket of her worn jacket and placed something on the table between us.

A photograph.

Genevieve.

Smiling.

Holding a baby I had never seen.

My voice came out lower than I intended.

"Where did you get that?"

She looked at me with something close to pity.

"Mr.

Mercer.

The twins aren't sick by accident.

And what Genevieve knew before she d*ed — she made me promise to tell you only if they ran out of time."

She paused.

"They're running out of time."

What secret did Genevieve hide — and does it hold the key to saving Jonah and Blythe?

The full truth is more devastating than anyone expected.
