Chapter 1: She Thought Nobody Would See What Happened After The Cup Broke

The cup looked enormous in her hands.

She was only four, and it took both of them just to keep the saucer level as she crossed the bright living room.

Her steps were tiny.

Careful.

Almost painfully slow.

But it was not the tea that made the scene difficult to watch.

It was her face.

Her cheeks were wet.

Her eyes were red.

She was already crying before she reached the woman waiting on the cream sofa.

Still, she kept walking.

The room around her could not have looked more peaceful.

Sunlight poured through tall windows.

The marble floor reflected everything above it.

The furniture was perfectly arranged.

Nothing about the house suggested that a little girl should be afraid to carry a cup across it.

She finally stopped in front of the sofa.

With trembling hands, she held the tea forward.

The woman took it.

The child immediately pulled her empty hands back toward her chest.

Then she waited.

The woman lifted the cup.

She took a sip.

For one brief moment, nobody moved.

Then her expression changed.

The cup came down.

Not toward the table.

Toward the floor.

Porcelain struck marble.

The sound filled the room.

White pieces scattered across the polished surface.

The little girl flinched as though the noise had gone straight through her.

Her hands flew toward her chest.

She began crying harder.

But the broken cup was only the beginning.

The woman leaned toward her.

Her voice grew sharper.

The child stood perfectly still, looking up at someone nearly twice her height.

Then the woman rose from the sofa.

Suddenly the difference between them became impossible to ignore.

One was a grown woman standing in heels.

The other was a four-year-old girl surrounded by broken porcelain.

The woman's arm moved.

One swift motion.

The little girl lost her balance.

Seconds later she was on the marble floor, crying, one small hand trying to hold herself up.

The woman did not kneel beside her.

She did not reach down to comfort her.

She stood over her.

Her finger pointed toward the floor as she continued speaking.

The girl curled onto her side.

The broken cup remained only a few feet away.

The huge room seemed strangely empty.

Then something moved behind them.

The double doors began to open.

A man appeared in the doorway carrying a dark travel bag.

At first he simply looked into the room.

Then he saw the child on the floor.

He saw the broken porcelain.

He saw the woman standing above her.

His face changed.

The bag remained in his hand as he started forward.

First quickly.

Then faster.

By the time he crossed the doorway, he was running.

The little girl was still crying.

The woman had not yet turned completely toward him.

And he had not yet reached either of them when the scene ended.

The cup had already broken.

The child was already on the floor.

But the woman who thought no one would see what happened had just run out of time.
