Chapter 2: What the Woman in Silk Already Knew

Madison didn't wait for Clara's answer.
She picked up one of the folded towels, dropped it on the floor, and walked out without looking back.
That was week one.
By week three, Clara had learned the pattern.
Madison never raised her voice in front of Ethan.
She saved that for the hours when he was locked in his home office or traveling.
The moment his car left the gate, something in Madison's face changed.
The polish dropped.
What was underneath it was cold and precise.
She began with small things.
Clara's work schedule moved to six in the morning.
Her cottage key was "temporarily" taken for a lock inspection that never happened.
Meals she prepared were sent back.
Twice.
Three times.
Then Madison started on Lily.
"That child has no business running through this house," she told Clara one afternoon, her voice flat.
"She's not a resident.
She's a liability."
Clara kept her eyes down.
"She's five, ma'am.
She stays in the cottage."
"Then make sure she does."
The night Ethan's phone rang during dinner, Clara was in the upstairs linen closet, sitting on the floor with her back against the wall.
Her wrist was wrapped in a dish towel.
Lily had found her there.
No one at the dinner table knew that.
No one except the woman in the champagne silk dress, who had smiled all the way through the appetizers.
When Ethan's chair scraped back and his footsteps hit the stairs, Madison's smile didn't waver.
But her hand tightened around her wine glass until her knuckles went white.
She knew exactly what was up there.
