Chapter 2: The Voice from the Doorway

Part 2 ⬇️
The room held its breath.
Victoria's husband — the man in the tuxedo — set his glass down and stepped forward.
"Emily." His voice was low.
A warning.
Emily turned to face him.
"You knew too, didn't you, Richard."
It wasn't a question.
His jaw tightened.
He said nothing.
Victoria found her voice again.
"She's grieving.
She doesn't know what she's saying.
Someone please—"
"I have the letters, Victoria." Emily opened her small clutch and pulled out a folded envelope.
"In your handwriting.
Dated three months before my mother's accident."
The word landed like a stone.
Accident.
A woman near the back of the room covered her mouth.
Richard took another step forward.
"Put that away.
Right now."
"Why?" Emily's voice broke — but her hand stayed steady.
"Because it proves you were both there that night?"
Victoria went pale.
"That's not what those letters say."
"Then why are you so afraid of them?"
Richard reached for the envelope.
Emily pulled it back.
And then a voice came from the doorway — a voice nobody expected to hear.
"Because I wrote the other half."
Everyone turned.
Standing at the entrance to the ballroom was an elderly woman — frail, leaning on a cane, but with eyes sharp as glass.
Emily's breath stopped.
She had been told this woman d*ed years ago.
