Chapter 2: The Document on the Table

The room was still frozen when Vanessa turned away from the screen.
Her expression didn't break.
Not even close.
"That footage proves nothing," she said, her voice smooth and cold.
"Anyone could have edited it."
A murmur rippled through the crowd.
Some guests looked uncertain.
A few board members exchanged glances.
Emily pressed her hand against her cheek and said nothing.
She had learned a long time ago that in rooms like this, a woman like her didn't win arguments.
She survived them.
Daniel kept his eyes on Vanessa.
"The timestamp is authenticated.
The system is monitored by a third party."
Vanessa smiled.
"Then I'd like to know why Emily Porter was terminated from Vance Logistics fourteen months ago.
Ask her what she took from us then."
The room shifted again.
Emily went pale.
She hadn't told anyone here about that.
Not Daniel.
Not anyone.
Which meant Vanessa had done her research.
This wasn't a moment of anger.
This had been planned — every detail, every word, every witness in this room.
Then Daniel's assistant appeared at his shoulder and handed him a single folded document.
Daniel opened it slowly.
His jaw tightened.
"Vanessa," he said quietly.
"Who authorized the transfer of funds from the Vance municipal account on October 3rd?"
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
