Chapter 2: The Envelope That Changed Everything

The room didn't move.
Didn't breathe.
On the screen, Vanessa's own hands had betrayed her — and seventy witnesses had seen every second of it.
Vanessa's composure cracked for just a moment.
Then her chin lifted.
"That footage has been tampered with.
My family's lawyers will prove it by morning."
A few guests shifted uncomfortably.
Some believed her.
Old money protects its own.
But Daniel didn't flinch.
He turned to Emily — still pressed against the staircase, still shaking — and said quietly, "Are you all right?"
Emily nodded.
Then she did something no one expected.
She reached into her satchel and pulled out a small folded envelope.
Her hands trembled as she held it out to Daniel.
"I was going to give this to the federal office on Monday," she whispered.
"I didn't know she knew."
Daniel opened it.
His expression didn't change — but his jaw tightened.
Vanessa's eyes locked onto that envelope.
For the first time all evening, she looked afraid.
"Where did you get that?" she said.
Her voice had dropped to something cold and dangerous.
"You have no idea what you're holding."
"I know exactly what I'm holding," Emily said.
And then a phone rang.
Loud.
Cutting through the silence.
It was Daniel's.

He glanced at the screen — and went completely still.
The caller ID read: *Vance Legal — URGENT.*
