Chapter 2: The Message From a Number I Didn't Know

Security escorted Raymond out through a side door while three hundred people watched in silence.
I picked my certificate up from the floor myself.
No one helped me.
My classmates looked away.
A few faculty members exchanged glances but said nothing.
The department director stood frozen at the podium, microphone still in his hand.
Theresa didn't move from her seat.
When I walked past her toward the exit, she grabbed my wrist.
"Don't you dare make this worse," she whispered.
"You brought this on yourself."
"Did I?" I said quietly.
"Or did Grandma Beatrice?"
Her grip loosened instantly.
That was the first time I had ever seen my mother's face go completely white.
She knew I had found something.
Outside, Raymond was still arguing with security when I passed him.
He called after me.
"Where do you think you're going?
We're not finished!"
I didn't turn around.
I had my phone in my hand, and on the screen was a photograph I had taken that morning — a trust document, dated eleven years ago, showing a balance of two hundred and forty thousand dollars.
My grandmother had left that money for me.
Every cent of it.
And according to the withdrawal records, it was almost gone.
But the tuition payments only accounted for a fraction of what had been taken.
So where had the rest gone?
That evening, I received a message from a number I didn't recognize.
*"Sabrina.
I know what your parents did.
And I have proof.
Don't trust anyone in that family.
Not yet."*
I stared at the screen.
I had no idea who had sent it.
---
What Sabrina uncovered next — and who that message was really from — changed everything.
