Chapter 2: What the Envelope Knew

I didn't move.
Rebecca's smile flickered.
Just for a second.
Then it came back, wider than before.
"Sweetheart, everyone is watching," she said quietly.
"Let's not do this here."
"Where did you plan to send her?"
The guests nearest the aisle went still.
Rebecca stepped closer and lowered her voice.
"We talked about this.
Emily needs structure.
A proper environment.
It's what's best for—"
"Where.
Did you plan.
To send her."
She glanced at Emily.
Then at the note in my jacket pocket.
"There's a very good boarding school," she said.
"Three hours away.
I've already paid the first term."
Emily buried her face in my shoulder.
I looked at Rebecca — really looked at her — and realized I was seeing her clearly for the first time.
"You paid the first term," I repeated.
"Because you never would have agreed." Her voice hardened.
"She's been holding you back for two years.
I thought once we were married, you'd understand."
A sound came from the back of the chapel.
I turned.
My mother was standing in the doorway.
She had heard everything.
And she was holding something — a folded envelope I had never seen before.
"There's something you need to read," she said.
"Before this goes any further."
Rebecca's face went white.
