Chapter 2: What Carol Found That Morning

I did not move.

Rebecca's smile flickered for just a second.

Then she reached out and touched Emily's shoulder.

"Sweetheart, go find the nanny.

The grown-ups need a moment."

Emily pressed closer to me.

I pulled the note from my jacket and held it up.

Rebecca's face went still.

"Where did you get that?"

"She gave it to me."

"That's not—" She stopped.

Lowered her voice.

"We can talk about this after the ceremony.

Please.

There are two hundred people waiting."

"Then they can keep waiting."

Her jaw tightened.

For the first time in two years, the warmth was completely gone.

"You're making a scene over a child's misunderstanding."

"She's seven, Rebecca.

She understood it perfectly."

Then my sister Carol appeared in the doorway behind us.

She had been crying.

She held her phone out toward me with a shaking hand.

"There's something you need to see," she said.

"I found it this morning.

I didn't know how to tell you."

On the screen was a message thread.

Rebecca's name was at the top.

The last message had been sent four days ago.

*Once he signs the certificate, the custody arrangement is already in place.

He won't be able to reverse it without a legal fight.*

My hands went cold.

Emily was still holding my collar.

And Rebecca was already reaching for Carol's phone.

What was in the rest of that message thread — and who else was involved in Rebecca's plan?
