Chapter 2: The Signature I Had Never Seen Before

My hand tightened around the phone.

Detective Collins gave me a small nod.

"She's stable," I said carefully.

"The doctors are with her now."

A pause.

"Good," Michael said.

"Good.

And the injector — did they find it?"

He asked it again.

Casually.

Like it was nothing.

"Why does the injector matter to you, Michael?"

Silence.

Then: "I'm just worried.

You know how these things get complicated."

Detective Collins was already writing something on her notepad.

She turned it toward me.

*Keep him talking.*

"Complicated how?" I said.

Another pause — longer this time.

"Daniel…

I think we need to talk before you speak to anyone else.

There are things about Anna's trust you don't fully understand."

My throat tightened.

Anna had set up that trust herself.

I had signed every document beside her.

I knew every line.

Or I thought I did.

"What things?" I said.

Michael's voice dropped.

"There were changes made.

Before she passed.

She wasn't herself near the end, Daniel.

Evelyn helped her.

That's all I'm saying."

Detective Collins went still.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me from the bed, her small hand still wrapped around mine.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

One photo attached.

It was Anna's signature — on a document I had never seen before.

---

What was in that document — and what did Michael and Evelyn change before Anna died?
