Chapter 2: What She Built While He Wasn't Watching

I walked out of that building and sat in my car for exactly four minutes.
Not crying.
Not shaking.
Just thinking.
I had one call to make.
"It's done," I said when he picked up.
"And?" His voice was calm.
Professional.
"He took everything I offered him.
Just like you said he would."
A pause.
"Then we move to the next step.
The transfer clears tonight."
I hung up and looked at myself in the rearview mirror.
Elena Sterling.
Twelve years erased in a single morning.
What Mark didn't know — what none of the Vances knew — was that I hadn't walked into that attorney's office empty-handed.
I had walked in with a plan.
For the past eight months, quietly, carefully, I had been rebuilding something Mark never thought to look for.
While he was busy choosing nursery colors with Chloe, I had been on calls with people in three different countries.
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
*Confirmation received.
Auckland office ready.*
I set the phone face-down on the passenger seat and started the engine.
Sophia and Maya were waiting at my sister's house.
We had a flight to catch at 6 AM.
Mark had the penthouse.
He had the SUV.
He had his son on the way and his family's approval and everything he thought he'd won.
What he didn't have was any idea what I had built while he wasn't watching.
And he wouldn't find out until it was far too late.
