Chapter 2: The Name He Had Never Connected

I didn't lower my voice.

I slid the ring off my finger and set it on the table in front of Marcus.

Quietly.

No drama.

Just placed it down like I was returning something that was never really mine.

The table went silent.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

"Valeria?"

I turned.

It was Richard Holt — Marcus's division director.

The man who signed Marcus's annual reviews.

He was walking toward us with a wide smile, hand already extended for a handshake.

But he wasn't looking at Marcus.

He was looking past me — at my father, Arthur, who had just risen from his seat at the family table across the room.

"Arthur Voss," Richard said, his voice suddenly different.

Careful.

Almost reverent.

"I had no idea — this is your daughter's wedding?"

My father smiled the way he always did.

Calm.

Unhurried.

Marcus went completely still.

I watched his face as the pieces landed one by one.

The private equity fund.

The Midwest connections.

The name he had heard in boardrooms but never connected to the quiet woman he was marrying.

Beatrice looked between Richard and my father with an expression I had never seen on her before.

Confusion.

Then something close to fear.

"Marcus," she said under her breath, "who is her father?"

Marcus didn't answer.
