The results showed something I never expected.
Grant wasn't sterile by chance.
He was sterile because of a medical procedure — one performed decades ago, without his knowledge, when he was just a boy.
And the doctor who performed it was the same man in that photograph with Evelyn.
I sat at the kitchen table staring at the papers until Grant walked in.
"You went through with the test," he said quietly.
"You knew," I said.
"You've always known."
He didn't deny it.
"My mother made me promise never to say anything."
"She made you protect HIM?
The man who did that to you as a child?"
Grant's jaw tightened.
"It's more complicated than that, Rachel."
"Then explain it to me.
Because right now it looks like your mother has been covering for that doctor for thirty years — and our daughter is the proof."
He went completely still.
Then his phone rang.
It was Evelyn.
He looked at the screen, then at me — and I saw something in his eyes I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not of me.
Not of the truth.
Of her.
