Chapter 2: The Folder on the Floor

Her husband didn't drop the belt.
He laughed.
"You called your father?" He looked around the ballroom like it was still his stage.
"This man hasn't spoken to you in nine years.
You think he can walk in here and save you?"
Her father didn't answer him.
He crouched down beside her instead, pressed one hand gently against her back, and said only four words.
"I have everything, sweetheart."
That's when his mother moved.
She crossed the room fast, champagne still in hand, voice low and vicious.
"Whatever you think you have — it won't hold.
We have judges.
We have lawyers.
We have people in this city you've never even heard of."
Her father finally looked up.
"I know exactly who you have." He reached into his jacket and placed a single folder on the floor between them.
"I've been paying closer attention than you realized.
For nine years."
The room went completely still.
One of the federal investigators stepped forward and spoke quietly to her husband's attorney near the door.
The attorney's face drained of color.
He turned, looked at the family, and slowly shook his head.
That's when her husband's sister stopped smiling.
On the floor, she pressed one hand to her stomach and felt the baby move.
She looked up at her father and whispered, "Is it enough?"
He didn't answer immediately.
And that silence was the most frightening thing anyone in that room had ever heard.
