Chapter 1: The Wrong Word

She thought Victor was at a meeting.

She had no idea he'd stepped through the door two hours early — and heard everything.

I knew something was wrong the moment I walked into the foyer.

Ethan wasn't crying the way babies cry when they're hungry or tired.

He was crying the way they cry when something hurts.

Lily was on the floor with him, her uniform dress twisted, her hands shaking as she tried to hold him still.

One of his arms hung at a wrong angle.

His face had gone from red to something closer to purple.

Serena was standing over them both.

Still in her evening gown.

Still perfectly composed.

"He wouldn't stop," she said, the moment she heard the door.

She didn't turn around immediately.

That told me everything.

I crossed the room and knelt beside Lily.

She flinched when I reached past her — not because she was afraid of me, but because her whole body was still braced for something else.

I took Ethan from her arms.

He stopped crying the moment I held him.

Not because the pain was gone.

Because he recognized me.

That hurt more than anything Serena could have said.

Lily looked up.

Her eyes were swollen.

There was a red mark along her forearm she was trying to hide beneath her sleeve.

"She h*rts him when you leave," she whispered.

Behind me, Serena exhaled sharply.

"She's exaggerating.

He was inconsolable.

I had to intervene."

I stood slowly.

I looked at my son's arm.

Then I looked at Serena.

She had chosen the wrong word.

Intervene.

As if what she had done to a fourteen-month-old child was a reasonable response to crying.

My hand closed into a fist at my side.

"You laid a hand on my son."

Serena's expression shifted for the first time.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

She was already deciding what version of tonight would be easiest to explain.

What Lily said next — the part she had been too afraid to tell me for months — was the reason Serena never set foot in my house again.

What did Lily finally tell Victor — and what happens to Serena?
