Chapter 2: The Man Under the Oak Tree

Part 2 ⬇️
He was standing under the oak tree at the edge of the yard.
An old man.
White hair.
Straight back.
Hands folded in front of him like he was waiting for permission to breathe.
I knew that posture.
I had memorized it fifty years ago and never let myself forget it.
My daughter appeared at my shoulder.
"Mom?
You've gone pale.
Come sit down—"
"Who is that man?"
She went very still.
"That's…
that's Dad.
Maya's grandfather.
He's been with us for—"
"Your father's name was Gerald."
She didn't answer.
"Ellen." My voice came out harder than I intended.
"Your father's name was Gerald.
Who is that man?"
She took my arm.
Her grip was too firm.
The grip of someone trying to steer, not comfort.
"Let's go to the kitchen.
I'll explain everything—"
"You'll explain it here."
Maya was still beside me, watching us both with wide, serious eyes.
Then the back door opened.
And he stepped inside.
He stopped when he saw me.
The color left his face.
His mouth opened and closed once, like a man who had rehearsed a thousand words and forgotten every single one.
Then he said the only thing that broke me completely.
"Eleanor.
I never wanted you to find out this way."
He knew my name.
He said it the way he always used to — soft on the first syllable, like it was something fragile.
My daughter was crying.
Maya had taken my hand.
And I still didn't know what any of them had been hiding from me — or for how long.
